相傳唐代有個叫劉簡的人，平生愛慕仙道，聽說哪裡有名山仙跡，定要去遊覽拜訪。開元（公元713至741年）初年劉簡遇一位自稱「虛無子」的採藥老人，虛無子被劉簡鍥而不捨的精神所感動，便把他帶到自己的藥園參觀。虛無子對他說：「長生不死是不可能的，但長壽是可望的。」虛無子指著水池邊一種長得墨綠鮮嫩的草說：「別以為只有高山上的靈芝是仙草，這水邊也長仙草，我就是常食這種草藥，活到百歲而發不白，耳聰目明的。」臨別時，虛無子送給劉簡一包藥種，讓他回去後種在水池邊、水田邊，苗長到20厘米以後即可開始服用。嫩時可當菜吃，夏秋可采鮮莖葉煎水喝，每天用鮮品100克左右。冬天則用陰乾的莖葉，每天30克煎水飲用。長期堅持，必有所成。劉簡回家後按照虛無子的吩咐，種植、食用，果然也活到100多歲而發不白、耳不聾，還能看清書上的小字。因這種植物葉墨綠，劉簡便給它取名為墨斗草。
1止血。
旱蓮草粉敷於動物傷口上和股動脈半切斷傷口上，止血時間平均為2分鐘。
2提高免疫。
旱蓮草水煎劑對小鼠灌胃可明顯增加胸腺重量，提高外周血中白細胞數量和T淋巴細胞百分率。可對抗環磷醯胺引起的溶血素抗體含量的減少，但對小鼠脾細胞分泌抗體功能和血清溶血素抗體含量均無影響。說明旱蓮草能提高細胞免疫功能，並能保護體液免疫功能；而對正常的體液免疫功能影響不大。
3保肝。
給與旱蓮草提取物後，動物血清AlT、AST、AKP的活性較對照組有明顯下降，肝細胞小葉壞死和脂肪變性明顯減輕，並發現尚能促進肝細胞的再生。旱蓮草抗肝毒的主要活性成分為螃蜞菊內酯、去甲螃蜞菊內酯。
抗自由基和抗染色體損傷。
旱蓮草螃蜞菊內酯通過消除氧自由基的機制，而實現對5-脂氧酶起抑制功效，以消除炎症物質，是一種對5一脂氧酶具有強力選擇性的抑制劑。旱蓮草灌胃和腹腔注射對環磷醯胺誘發的小鼠骨髓多染紅細胞微核有明顯的抑制效應，表明對染色體損傷有一定的保護作用。
